The mall is an experience, undoubtedly. I mean, we start frequenting the mall as early as our middle school/ junior high years and it seems to become a staple in our lives. We hit the mall on a bad day for retail therapy, we window shop there, shop for others. However, more times than not I leave the mall empty handed and disappointed. Other times (like around the holidays) I decide I HATE the mall. But most frequently, I just don't have time to put the effort in...get dressed up smartly, drive to a shopping center, find a parking spot and peruse mindlessly for however many hours, when in reality I could be at the gym, with my husband having fun, or even blogging. These are just a few of the many reasons I've ditched the traditional mall for the luxury of online shopping. The first excuse people usually have for not online shopping is always the same...
How do I know if what I bought will fit??
Well these days with most sites offering free returns...WHO CARES IF IT FITS?! If it doesn't, just put it right back in the box, slap the pre-paid label on it and send. It. Back. You lose no time. You can exchange for a different size or just send it back for a full refund. I mean let's be honest, you do this with most of your Christmas gifts already...it's really not a huge deal.
I admit though, having to return something that you thought you'd really love can be a bit heartbreaking. But these days sites like ShopBop and Revolve Clothing...they make it fool proof. They provide catwalk videos so you can see how the fabric moves (not just still photos). They provide model details so you can guess your size based on the model if you are unfamiliar with the brand. For instance, model Jamie is wearing a cute mini-skirt. Jamie is 5'9 and her waist is 24.5 inches and hips 36. She's wearing an extra small. Well I'm 5'5, 25 inches and 36. The extra small should fit fine since Jamie is WAY taller than me. But again, if it's tight, no big deal. I'll send it back and get email confirmation when it arrives back at the warehouse and my refund is processed.
I can online shop in my sleep. I do it in bed, at the airport, at work (shhhh) in the car, on the treadmill....it's so simple. Most major sites offer apps that allow you to manage all of your preferences on it. For instance, ShopBop allows me to save favorite items AND tells me when they go on sale. Neiman Marcus gives me a wish list that I can send people when they utter the anticipated yearly question "WHAT DO YOU WANT FOR YOUR BIRTHDAY?"
Online shopping can make your life very very simple. You just have to be open to finding your favorite sites and trying a few things out. I shop about 10 different stores. Some are online boutiques, others are major department stores. But all of them carry brands that I've fallen in love with and make it simple for me to get exactly what I'm looking for delivered right to my door without having to leave my couch if I don't want to. Online shopping is just shopping smarter. If you are afraid to try it, let Nordstrom be your first. Their customer service is second to none and they carry everything under the sun. High and low end. Find something there and try ordering. You'll be pleasantly surprised with how fast it shows up on your doorstep and how easy it is to return it, IF you find that you have to. Often times, I give my return right to my mailman. He's a nice guy. Most of them are. They'll take it for you.
Now if you have reservations I want to know. Send me a comment, and if you are brave enough to give it a try, let me know as well. In no time you'll be shopping like a pro online, and maybe just maybe you'll start using liketoknow.it and shopping my Instagram looks...since those links take you DIRECTLY to all of my favorite online sites!
